Whakarāpopototanga:This explores the first mysterious meeting between Russians and Maori in 1820, then goes to Russia in search of treasure that tells us of the curiosity and bonds that emerge when two apparently diverse cultures meet for the first time in an era when conflict was the norm and where danger followed both. The first encounter between the Russians and Maori of Queen Charlotte Sounds draws from first hand accounts of the voyagers; Commander Thaddeus von Bellingshausen Ship's Doctor Galkin; Astronomer and Collector Simonov; Midshipman Novosilsky; Leading Seaman Kiselyov; Ship's Artist Pavel Nikolaevich Mikhaylov. These extracts are woven into a dramatic reconstruction that takes place in the Captain's cabin onboard the sloop 'Vostok'. Additional Commentary is provided by interviews with an array of Russian and New Zealand historians, political commentators and naval experts. We travel to Russia and find the taonga / treasures that were traded when the Russians visited. Taonga / treasures that tell us of a people that no longer exist because Te Rauparaha came to the sounds several years after the Russian visit and annihilated the inhabitants of that area. The only remaining memory of these people are the taonga that exist in these Russian Museums.
