Double movement : an exploration of the interaction between live and digital dancer, sharing the physical space : an exegesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art and Design (MA&D), 2012 / Dannielle Chandler ; supervisors: Jennifer Nikolai, Gregory Bennett.
Exploring the interaction between live and digital dancer I ask: how can digital technologies such as motion capture (mocap) and video projection be employed to enhance live dance performance? 520 | 3 | |a Exploring the interaction between live and digital dancer I ask: how can digital technologies such as motion capture (mocap) and video projection be employed to enhance live dance performance? Using Practice as Research (PaR), and a Dramaturgical approach, I interrogate and challenge the relationship between dance and technology. Choreography and structured improvisation are framed by implemented and inherent Obstructions, as part of a dramaturgical investigation of a dialogue between live and digital dancer. An exploration into the use of space (virtual and physical) reflects the application of constraints in the choreographic process. I ask: how does the form the digital dancer takes affect the relationship with the live dancer? The final outcome is a dance performance with live and digital dancers interacting in the physical space. The two dance pieces: Sheet Piece and Box Piece, which together comprise Double Movement, follow Auslander's idea that technology cannot replace human presence in performance but can extend the capabilities of human performers. | |
