Description
Summary:On his way to a new fatherland in Italy, Aeneas must pass through the bitter lesson of the Underworld. At this point he has crossed many boundaries, dealt with numerous crises affecting the Trojan refugees, visited both friendly and hostile territories, and faced irreparable losses. Numerous times Aeneas' loyalty to his leading mission was harshly tested. Why then is the Underworld a mandatory threshold before reaching his promised land? The answer lies in the experiences of his unresolved past: the death of his wife, Creusa; the demise of Dido, a former lover who offered him shelter; and the death of his father. Additionally, a new war awaits him in Italy. Although the Underworld looks like a shocking experience, in truth, it represents a beneficial review and a way for Aeneas to make peace with his old universe and reach closure: he needs to forgive himself for past neglect and human mistakes, so that he can step forward with fresh forces onto new battlefields. Any leader has an Underworld: it is a place where one faces past errors and learns the courage to cross new boundaries. Through this case, students will have the opportunity to investigate the skills necessary to form those boundaries.
