Abstract: The article discusses the history of work, culture and community in the freezing works, a large-scale industry of meat-processing operations in New Zealand, in the 1970s and 1980s. Topics discussed include the experience of Henare Ngaera O'Keefe and Maurice Davis as workers at the Tomoana freezing works in 1971, the workplace culture in relation to ethnicity and gender, and the rise and decline of freezing workers' unionism between 1973 and 1994.
