Abstract: Natural history museums are facing challenges as technology advances and discussions about repatriating stolen items arise. However, these museums hold valuable collections that provide insights into the past and present. New technologies like DNA sequencing and CT scanning allow researchers to make discoveries from old specimens that were previously impossible. Despite concerns about a decline in collecting new specimens due to stricter regulations and recognition of theft and colonization, expanding collections is seen as an investment in future science and understanding the changing planet. The article highlights the importance of museums in preserving and displaying objects that hold valuable knowledge about the natural world and human history, with examples from the American Museum of Natural History and the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma.
