Abstract: The article presents a historical overview of the development of the Internet video sharing web site YouTube, founded by graphic designer Chad Hurley and software engineers Steven Chen and Jawed Karim. Particular focus is given to lawsuits filed against YouTube due to its use of copyrighted material, the purchase of YouTube by the Internet company Google, the company's financial growth under the leadership of Salar Kamangar, and efforts by YouTube employee Robert Kyncl to develop a system for streaming Web-based television channels to mainstream television audiences.
