Abstract: The shift from independent broadsheet cartoon magazines to the newspapers marked an important transformation in cartooning altogether. Despite being exposed to the pressures of an editorial board above them, cartoonists were thus gaining a wider popularity and readership. Here arises the question of how does the cartoonist’s mentality relate to his cartoons as well as the editorial board above him and how he maneuvers his career in turbulent times. Enver Ahmed is an interesting example in this regard considering the twist that took place in his career. His early days as a cartoonist were withPioneerwhich he left at a later stage forDawn, the mouthpiece of the Muslim League. After drawing cartoons vehemently critiquing the Congress and other League opponents he shifted toHindustan Times; a newspaper that stood on the side of Congress, in 1946. This latter shift is interesting because of the political background during 1946, and therefore Ahmed and his cartoons become tools to understand the politics of cartooning in those times.
