Abstract: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century hand weaving was thought to have become obsolete. Power looms—machines that had become increasingly automated, and ubiquitous in factories across the United States—would now, it seemed, replace all human labor and as a result, creativity and knowledge of weaving would disappear. Over the last century, however, knowledge of weaving has not waned, nor has creativity declined. Instead, both have thrived, and even surged, as a result of advancements in technology. Drawing on three case studies, this article illustrates how hand weavers have continuously remained at the forefront of innovation in textile art and design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
