Abstract: That Leonardo was Massys's direct model for his innovative study heads is clear from the essay by Clayton, "Leonardo's Grotesques". Hollar, however, rather than using the other bust-length Leonardo sheets or clustered caricatures, also engraved the London/New York pendant pair, attentively including their hands (with Massys's added rosebud; fig. 38). Moreover, one surviving collection of Leonardo drawings remained together in the seventeenth-century Arundel collection, where they were etched by Wenzel Hollar along with thirteen grotesque heads by Leonardo.
