Abstract: The article informs about ad hoc transactions in web applications, where developers coordinate database operations using application code, and presents the first comprehensive study on them. Topics include the prevalence of ad hoc transactions in popular open-source web applications, their flexibility compared to database transactions, their error-prone nature, and their potential for improving performance in contentious workloads by leveraging application semantics.
