Abstract: Using the universal set "all that is built" we can examine the most obvious evidence of our belief in architectural exceptionalism: if we believe that architecture operates in a way that places it "above others of the same kinds" and "others" in this instance are other buildings, then we believe that architecture is exceptional. If we are going to wrestle with I the role of the built i in architecture and architectural pedagogy, then I propose we begin where Howard Davis did: begin with I all i that is built.[1] I refer to this grouping as a superset. It is historian Nikolaus Pevsner's two-part test that declares the cathedral is architecture and the bicycle shed is a building.[16] Some of us might accept this reference as canon - while others easily dismiss it as a trope.
