Abstract: I Women in their Element i was published under the auspices of the European Chemical Society, in the context of the 150-year anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic system, following a decision of the 74th Plenary Meeting of United Nations General Assembly in 2017 proclaiming 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table. Overall, the book provides the reader with an original, intellectually stimulating, and fascinating kaleidoscopic view of the science of elements and periodic classification, and of how women, with their personal, social, and cultural specificities, were actively involved in this process. They thus wove the history of the research on chemical elements and the periodic table with the variety of women's contributions to the field at different times and places and in different social, cultural, and scientific contexts.
