Abstract: Its court cases include many ecclesiastical disputes over matters such as advowsons, but also demonstrate where tensions could arise in the relationship between town and minster, such as the 1304 defamation case in which Henry of Normanton, chaplain of the town, accused Hugh le Milner, chaplain of an altar in Southwell minster, of maliciously excommunicating the said Henry, and disputes over property between tenants in Southwell, such as the 1344 quarrel over holdings in Edingley when Geoffrey Augeny and his wife Beatrice claimed that jurors had falsely sworn concerning manorial custom over the inheritance of tenements there. The White Book (Liber Albus) of Southwell: 2 vols. In addition to the detail it provides about the minster, the White Book allows us to track the development of Southwell as a town.
