| Abstract (English): | This article discusses the search for freedom by enslaved people in Louisiana, before the abolitionist laws that banned slavery in the United States in 1865. From the study of fugitive men and women, first to Spanish and Mexican Texas territory and then to northern Mexican states such as Tamaulipas, we can observe that despite living in highly oppressive systems, thousands of enslaved people constantly fought for their own freedom and that of their families during the nineteenth century. Even while abolitionist discussions were taking place around the world, they risked their lives and those of their families to seek freedom and better living conditions. Therefore, it is intended to decenter abolitionist laws as milestones of freedom, emphasizing the struggles for emancipation undertaken by enslaved people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | En el presente artículo se analiza la búsqueda de la libertad por parte de las personas esclavizadas en Louisiana, antes de las leyes abolicionistas que prohibieron la esclavitud en Estados Unidos en 1865. A partir del estudio de las fugas de hombres y mujeres, primero a territorio de Tejas español y mexicano y luego a estados del norte de México como Tamaulipas, es posible observar que, a pesar de vivir en sistemas altamente opresivos, miles de personas esclavizadas lucharon constantemente por su propia libertad y la de sus familias durante el siglo XIX. Incluso, mientras tenían lugar discusiones abolicionistas en el mundo entero, arriesgaron sus vidas y las de sus familiares para buscar ser libres y obtener mejores condiciones de vida. En este sentido, se pretende descentrar a las leyes abolicionistas como hitos de libertad, haciendo énfasis en las luchas por emanciparse emprendidas por parte de las personas esclavizadas.
