| Abstract: | The article discusses Franz Kugler's practical application of art historical knowledge on his handbooks "Handbuch der Geschichte der Malerei" and "Handbuch der Kunstgeschichte." His handbooks can be considered as significant materials for art historical research because they serve the self-definition of a relatively new discipline. The picture compendium for his handbook integrates the individual work of art into the stylistic panorama of an epoch, of a school, or of the art of a nation. |
