Abstract: Hicks' I The Brutish Museums i is anchored on the idea that academic activism has a role to play in not only driving this change, but also leading it. Hicks rightly highlights how these two bodies of work have provided a theoretical spine for teaching museum anthropology, and how they have also facilitated ongoing silences regarding the return of material cultural heritage. Hicks rightly points out how many of the present generation of curators and museum decision-makers were introduced to repatriation as a matter of debate; as an ethical, practical, and intellectual question, something to think through before acting on. I The Brutish Museums i by Dan Hicks is both an intellectual and theoretical engagement with an academic discipline, and a work of public activism and consequential intent.
