Abstract: With the outbreak of the First World War, the German Jewish department store owners placed themselves and their companies behind the war effort "patriotically fighting the German cause on all fronts" (p. 113). Mueller notes how the German high command depended on the capacity of department stores to obtain, handle and transport vast quantities of products. This book examines the history of German department stores, especially focussing on the Knopf, Schocken, Wertheim, Jandorf, Wronker, Karstadt and Tietz companies. [Extracted from the article]
