Abstract: The article features the diary of sculptor William Thomas Trethewey of New Zealand, which chronicles his travels and experiences in such countries as Germany, France and Australia in 1936. Also cited are a brief history of Trethewey's life including his Cornish carpenter/father Jabez Trethewey, William's earlier works as woodcarver and monumental mason, and a comparison between Thethewey and his contemporaries like Margaret Butler, Richard Gross and Francis Shurrock.
