Abstract: While I Bangkok Utopia i offers an engaging explanation for the hybrid model of city planning and architecture, there are several points where its arguments remain less than convincing, especially when it comes to the use of Buddhist vernacular such as I Nibbana i and I Vimana i . This changed as a result of the Siamese Revolution of 1932, when the principles of city planning and architecture were again adapted to serve new social ideals that did not simply aim at modernity, but also to present "Thai-ness" in a new light, ushering in the age of I Sri Ariya i . The concept of creating a utopian city that embodies the sacred symbolisms espoused by various Buddhist texts is an ancient practice that has long been used by Thai elites in designing city layouts, along with numerous works of architecture.
