Abstract: The article discusses how crime in the 1930s influenced the creation of gangster films. The author describes the death of bank robber John Dillinger at a theater after seeing the motion picture "Manhattan Melodrama" and comments on how Prohibition led to the rise of gangsters such as Al Capone and Lucky Luciano and inspired the production of films such as "Little Caesar," "Scarface" and "The Public Enemy." Protests by church groups and politicians led to the censorship of gangster films.
