Description
Summary:"Nineteenth century tattooing has been well documented, but nothing has been written of tattooing in the twentieth century, a period when the custom underwent a brief resurgence and finally died. This book tells the full story of Maori tattooing in the twentieth century. Michael King travelled thousands of miles around New zealand to speak with women who were tattooed or people who knoew of the custom from first-hand experience. he talked to over 70 women who had the moko. Since he started, in 1968, over half have died. This book then, is the historic record of a dead art. As the women with moko die, so does moko, the custom that embodies and idealises much that is valued in Maori society. Marti Friedlander's superb photographs illustrate with skill and compassion the moko, the women who carried it and the environment in which many of them lived. Bill parker, lecturer in Maori studies at Victory University of Wellingto has remarked of this book: "The writing exudes a warmth and a sensitive regard...This book is a supplement, a fitting epilogue, to Robley's notable and much earlier work [Moko, or, Maori tattooing] -- it is a fitting requiem to the disappearance of the moko""--Dust jacket.
