| Summary: | "Erich Lessing, since 1951 a member of the legendary Magnum agency, is a doyen of Austrian photography who received international recognition at an early stage. Lessing worked in the '50s and '60s for Life, Paris Match, Quick and Picture Post and with a reporter's eye documented post-war Europe in photos. In particular his pictures of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution achieved world-wide fame, and for them he was given the "American Art Directors' Award." Lessing's works always revolve around the "conditio humana" at the moment when power and powerlessness come face to face, when the joy of living is suddenly overclouded with pain. Erich Lessing's photos seize the opportunity to recount an instant of history which will never be repeated. Born 1923 in Vienna, Austria, Erich Lessing emigrated in 1939 to Palestine. After studying radio technology at the Technion in Haifa he lived in a kibbutz breeding carp and trout. Later he worked as a taxicab-driver, a beach-photographer and as an official British Army photographer. After returning to Austria in 1947 Lessing became a photo-reporter for Associated Press. In 1951 he joined the Magnum photographers' co-operative. He has been given many honours, including the Grand Austrian State Prize for Artistic Photography (1997). He lives in Vienna." "Traudl Lessing was born 1925 in Vienna, Austria. After the war she worked for Associated Press and then for Reuters news agency, marrying Erich Lessing in 1949. Their first joint reporting assignment took them to Spain in 1951. After spending a while in Paris she moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where she became Film and Photo Officer for the World Health Organization. Back in Austria Traudl Lessing became a correspondent for TIME Magazine, People Magazine and Sports Illustrated.
