Summary: | "Explores the effect tourism is having on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. It looks at the effects on the people, their culture, economy and the environment. With a beach for every day of the year, it seems like a holiday paradise but beneath the surface it's a different story for many of the islanders. Little of the money the tourists spend stays on the island. Most hotels are foreign-owned and its food and even souvenirs are produced abroad. Luxury "all inclusive" hotels and cruise ships discourage tourists from spending with local traders. Tourism development also threatens the natural environment, such as the mangrove swamps. Local groups are promoting new forms of holiday-making, eco-tourism for example. But change will be slow. Government corruption and pressure from big business stand in the way""--www.ema.com.au |
