Summary: | This research builds on Squires' (1999) concept of ʻperipatetic electronic teachersʼ and Rankinʼs (2012) notion of the ʻperipatetic learnerʼ, to explore how new mobile technologies offer opportunities to re-think tertiary educational practices. While many institutions have embraced the iPad as the ʻgame-changerʼ in education (Brown-Martin, 2010), existing reports tend only to highlight added logistical value (Laurillard, 2008). By taking a creative technological perspective, this dissertation suggests that the affordances of the Apple iOS platform need to be more critically explored and evaluated in light of the changing paradigms of the mobile age. By contributing to a deeper understanding of both the inherent affordances and challenges that occur when appropriating mobile technologies into learning and teaching practice, the research will show how the mobile device can reshape or creatively disrupt the spatio-temporal structures of formal tertiary education and its associated pedagogies. |
