Description
Summary:Manipulating the Pretty is a practice-led illustration project that draws attention to notions of artificial beauty in the context of media depictions of an 'idealized self'. Tensions between one's individual sense of identity and manipulated images presented to the public domain form the focus of the research. Through an investigation of the way beauty is coded in contemporary media, with particular reference to the notion of 'lookism' in Korea, I set out to explore how the self can become artificialised. To this end, I manipulate portraits of real people using distortion and re-emphasis to reveal how identities can be constructed. The project outcome, 'identity theft portraits', will take the form of a short animated projection. These portraits act as a set of provocations and raise questions regarding accepted constructions of prettiness. They also draw attention not only to genericisation, but also to the signifiers of individual identity.
