The following idea was the criterion in selecting the data and the principle in grouping the data: The nature of man is regarded as forming the center of three great lines of interest, namely, the study of human activities as the psychologist sees them, the study of human life as the doctor looks at it, and the growth of systematic beliefs as reflected in philosophy and religion. The union of these in their historical development seemed likely to yield what might be called an autobiography of the human mind. The author asserts that a history of psychology must not anticipate; it must be a record of beliefs about the soul and of the growth of the human mind in and through the development of those beliefs.
