Whakarāpopototanga:Winston Churchill described it as "staring the black dog in the eye." Author William Styron refers to it as "darkness visible" and singer Tim Finn, as "dirty creature." They are among the surprisingly high number of people who have experienced depression, a mood disorder thought to be caused by a chemical disturbance in the brain. Depression is the hidden epidemic of the industrial society; one in four women and one in six men will suffer from it at some stage of their lives. Unlike cancer and heart disease, which are taken seriously by our society, depression more often than not, goes unrecognised or denied. Depression can be caused by a number of factors, either genetic, viral or physical, or a combination of any of these. The film interviews people who have suffered directly or indirectly from depression. It also covers a wide range of treatments that are currently in use.
