Description
Summary:Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D., developed the Internal Family Systems Model of family therapy. This model extends family systems concepts and techniques to an intra-psychic process. This series of six therapy sessions features a married couple, Dennis and Renee, who are having relationship problems.
In session one, Dennis explains his past affair and how it has strained the marriage, and Renee describes her intimacy problems and feelings of self-blame. Schwartz helps them both to focus on the different parts of themselves involved in their feelings and experiences as well as to have a supervised dialog. In session two, they have a supervised dialog lead by Schwartz. The husband deals with his feelings of guilt and worthlessness while the wife expresses her anger and resentment. In session three, they communicate with each other about parts of themselves. Dennis expresses fear and shame related to his affair and money issues, and Renee expresses grief. In session four, they express their worry about whether to tell their children of their marital difficulties and how to do so. Schwartz discusses possible consequences with them, as well as possible things to say. In session five, they see progress recently due to Dennis being more open and available. They want to tell their children about their marital problems, and to continue in their upward trend. The husband goes into some more detail about his affair. In session six, they realise they have made progress over the six sessions but still have a lot of work to do. Renee has experienced a large, rageful part of herself that scares her husband and children. Dennis still finds therapy difficult and must work on being available and open.
