Summary:The following case study examines the rise of the shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh using information collected about an existing local company, Western Marine Shipyard Limited (WMSL). Although this industry demands skill and expensive resources, taking investment risks can lead to fortune. A unique approach to sourcing and manufacturing by WMSL has given the company a competitive advantage. This case study highlights how WMSL business strategies such as supply chain relationships and raw material sourcing increased its market share in small and medium sized shipbuilding, while careful planning allowed the company to be more aggressive in addressing challenges.
