Whakarāpopototanga:Dickens' City opens the a dialogue between phenomenology, philosophy and the Dickensian city in all its forms. Taking Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project as its model, Julian Wolfreys shows that, in their representations of London -- its streets, buildings, public institutions, domestic residences, rooms and phenomena -- Dickens' novels and journalism can be seen as forerunners of urban and material phenomenology. From Bells, Bridges and Butlers, through Inns and Interiors, the Police and the Post to Todgers and the Thames, Wolfreys presents Dickens' city in 26 episodes. He radically reorients London in the 19th century, the development of Dickens as a writer, and the ways in which readers today receive and perceive both.
