Description
Summary:Following the reception of Nova Southeastern University's Quality of Life Faculty Community-Based Applied Research Grant, we conducted the study with an intent to gain insight into the lived experience of a diverse number of older adults living through challenging economic times. We were also interested in discovering influences of ageism while providing a voice for an often marginalized population. Finally, we wanted to translate potential findings to better serve this diverse population in the United States and more specifically in South Florida. To achieve these goals, we chose the phenomenological qualitative method, where the phenomenon of study was the experience of growing older. The questions that we were asking ourselves at the beginning of this study were "What are the experiences of an aging self?" and "What are the experiences of aging in a time of economic turbulence?" This case study provides a detailed overview of Transcendental Phenomenology--the approach that we chose for this study. In this case study, we specifically address the reasoning behind choosing this methodology, the impact of this research method on our data collection and analysis, as well as philosophical underpinnings that support this design. We describe the phenomenological process, explaining such terms as epoché, bracketing, horizontalization, textural description, imaginative variation, structural description, and synthesis. We also illustrate member checking, triangulation, and peer review as methods of data verification within the framework of a qualitative research study.
