Description
Summary:Enhanced efficiency, effectiveness, and efficacy are values frequently used to justify the restructuring of organisations to meet financial, productivity, or sustainability demands of organisations, nations, or even the global economy. Where a restructure entails the severance of employees, the implications of their departure will ripple not only through the restructured organisation but also through the host community. This case tells the story of Sue as she faces the implications of the loss of paid employment for herself, her family, and the people she and her son work with to the benefit of their community. Sue's story is set in Aotearoa-New Zealand, a jurisdiction that in the 1980s was at the vanguard of intensifying market-driven globalisation often referred to as neoliberalism. In December 2017 the newly elected Prime Minister explicitly implicated the neoliberal doctrine in this nation's degraded wellbeing. This case invites critical scrutiny of stakeholder theory as a key to the education of the people who manage our business, government, and community organisations. By what moral compass are you driven when faced with a decision that will benefit some at the expense of others?
