Description
Summary:"This is the story of an action-research project. Such research is planned to help in the solving of an immediate and practical problem, as well as to advance basic scientific knowledge. This book is also a study in problems of communication. Working together effectively, as all kinds of groups of people must do, requires successful intercommunication of information, understandings, attitudes, and feelings. When any part of this necessary communication breaks down, difficulties multiply. It is really surprising how little people feel free to communicate with others. To a large extent, as Chapter 1 will indicate, we try to do what we think other people expect us to do. But if each individual or group has an incorrect perception of what the other individual or group expects of him, his action, no matter how well performed, will not be the right action. Poor communication is at the heart of many human relations problems. The age-old problem of school and community relationships and of teacher and student relationships is a part of the story of this study. The methods by which these relationships were examined through action-research, using a human relations survey, have many important implications, not only for education, but also for other areas where human relations problems appear. The action-research project reported here, stripped of its sometimes strange vocabulary and percentage tables, is a simple story in an area familiar to all of us. Teachers, parents, and children were having the usual trouble with each other, just as many other different groups which must work together. The problem might easily have been between teacher and supervisor, or supervisor and administrator. In this case the persons involved were professionally alert, and took up these problems in an in-service training program for teachers"--Foreword.
