The writer of this new candidate for popular favor does not flatter himself that, in this work, he has accomplished the long-sought desideratum of a true positive science of mind, adequate to the wants of humanity in the afternoon of the nineteenth century; but he ventures to indulge the hope that, while he has added something to the logical evolution and classification of the mental faculties, processes, and products, he has at the same time, as the result of sixteen years of labor in the recitation-room, been enabled to present the recognized facts and principles of Psychology in a form which will commend itself to the unbiased judgment of the practical teacher, and tend, in some degree, to popularize this important but much neglected science. It is useless to consume time in pointing out the novelties that appear in this book; the teacher will readily detect them, and to his candid judgment they are unreservedly committed, with the hope that, if they do not always find acceptance, they may at least provoke to a reexamination of the contested points, and thus lead to more perfect results in the future"--Preface.
