Description
Summary:"I have not dealt in this book with the basic question of what kind of academic training or doctoral program would best equip the psychological practitioner of the future; nor have I advocated any particular kind of professional experiences (under supervision, and beyond) which should be part of the background from which the practitioner emerges. What I have done in this connection is to call on seventy colleagues, now well established in practice, to answer a questionnaire relating to what they feel to have been the most important aspects of their background and training experiences, that is, which they feel equip them now to function as responsible and mature psychological practitioners in their communities. I repeat, responsible and mature; for if there is one prerequisite for the independent practitioner it is to have achieved some degree of personal and professional maturity. There is no magic formula for maturity but amongst its ingredients must surely be time to have coped with the problems of living, self-knowledge such as can be acquired by some form of personal, analytic experience, and professional dedication as exhibited by published contributions in the field, or active participation in professional affairs. It is critically important, it seems to me, that the public turn to wise as well as thoroughly trained persons, when seeking services from a new profession"--Preface.
