Summary: | "Land, Power and Prestige is a study of Bronze Age rectilinear field systems in Lowland England, made possible by the rapid pace of discovery in developer-funded work. A major phase of economic expansion occurred in Southern England during the late second and early first millennium B.C., accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. The study draws on a substantial body of commercial reports or "grey literature", to examine the correlation between enclosed landscapes, high status compounds and concentrations of metalwork deposition. It shows that during the Later Bronze Age (1500-700 B.C.) gridded landscapes were created in the context of a politically dominant English Channel-North Sea region. Recent discoveries show both the scale of Bronze Age enclosure and the sophistication of animal husbandry in these formal landscapes."--BOOK JACKET. |
