Description
Summary:In this NVivo podcast, Dr. Reem Doukmak and Paul O'Donnell discuss their Coventry Creates Project: Reintegrate. Together, they are using the medium of art to celebrate and explore the reintegration process for refugees and asylum seekers.Reem emphasizes that drama can be particularly powerful in enabling people to strengthen their language learning and integration experience into their new communities. The project aimed to assess how drama can benefit individuals, both via doing the drama itself and through the collaborative nature of drama.Because the project began during the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to adapt their approach to develop it for a virtual environment and considered tools such as podcasts, audio clips and video, collaborating with participants to decide on and create the best medium. Doukmak and O'Donnell were able to become familiar with the lived experience of their participants and came across some striking findings. For instance, Reem recalls that, surprisingly, many participants also touched on the more positive experiences of their migration. Paul recalls how the drama environment created a safe space for participants to tell their stories, many of which 'brought [him] to tears'.They go on to discuss how they planned the research, including obtaining consent from their participants, questions of anonymity and their roles as researchers while partaking in the project. Reem explains that they conducted a thematic analysis on the data collected and aimed to make their findings as accessible as possible. She also iterates to those wanting to conduct research, 'Make a plan, but never feel you need to stick to it, because it's going to be reshaped once you start involving or talking to the participants, because in the end, their share is very important. And try to think of it as a learning process, rather than an end product'. Paul adds, 'There's a way of doing this art completely wrong, and that is exploiting participants for their dramatic stories, [whereas using drama as a research tool ensures that] participants feel safe'.This podcast series is brought to you by a collaborative partnership between SAGE Publishing and QSR International: https://www.qsrinternational.com.
