Description
Summary:This thesis consists of practice-led research in the form of a full-length script for a feature film animation; plus a 6,000-word essay (exegesis). A summary of the script is as follows: By Fire is a queer love story set in medieval fantasy consisting of magical royalty, racial hierarchies, oppression, and rebellion. It follows the journeys of the dual protagonists: the Tidal servant Lenne, and the Algan Princess Rinala. The Tide is a race that was betrayed and oppressed by the Algan race in the decades prior to the beginning of the story. The antagonists attempt to force them into accepting and fulfilling their duty; however, this clashes with their desire to pursue their feelings for one another. Sharla, Rinala’s mother and the Queen of Algan, pressures Rinala to fulfil her duties as the Algan Princess. However, one of her duties becomes subduing and eliminating Tidal threats, which ultimately involves Lenne. Nolan, Lenne’s uncle, is consumed by hatred and his need for revenge for the transgressions against the Tide. Lenne sways between her feelings for Rinala and her duty towards her people while Rinala adheres firmly to her responsibilities as the Princess of Algan. Throughout By Fire, Lenne and Rinala are presented with difficult decisions and challenges. They must ultimately choose to stay loyal to their own people, or selfishly pursue their love for one another. The script is framed by an Exegesis which is a 6,000-word essay on the subject of: 1. the genre of the script 2. the development process from synopsis to second draft.
