Description
Summary:In March 2020, Netflix released a highly controversial and novel documentary, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, which, following the first 10 days of its online availability, was viewed by 34 million unique viewers in the United States. While the storyline of Tiger King is primarily focused on illustrating the chaotic feud between two core protagonists, Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, the documentary sheds light on the evolution and demise of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (G.W. Zoo), based in Oklahoma in the United States. It also provides extensive insight into the different business models, revenue streams, corporation types, and competitive landscape defining the U.S. zoo industry. This case encourages students to critically evaluate G.W. Zoo's business model, leadership, organizational culture, and market competitors in order to investigate and determine: (1) whether and in which dimensions G.W. Zoo implemented innovation; (2) whether G.W. Zoo comprised barriers to innovation; (3) whether G.W. Zoo could have seized any innovation opportunities presented in the storyline to generate additional revenue; and (4) whether Joe Exotic could have implemented any strategies to overcome the conflict he encountered with Carole Baskin.
