Description
Summary:Severely disabled, Diego is a director at the (fictional) Poor People's Inter-Faith Foundation (PPIFF). Dedicated to eradicating poverty, PPIFF operates under the foundational values of compassion and love--shared virtues among six religions giving support. When first hired, some employees felt awkward around Diego because of his disability. They quickly became comfortable, however, and PPIFF provided Diego with disability accommodations consistent with its foundational values. All went well until a new CEO arrived, who drastically transformed the work culture into one more akin to a corporate model. She harassed and humiliated Diego and, during a reorganization, withdrew his disability accommodations. Meanwhile the new corporate model, which resulted in the reorganization, failed to demonstrate significant revenue and disrupted the workforce. Given his options, Diego resigned. PPIFF's governing board increasingly doubted the validity of the changes made by the new CEO. What can the governing board do to return to its foundational values in calculating productivity? Although the names and setting have changed, this case is based on a true story.Students will be asked to evaluate the interplay among the following workplace dynamics: (a) organizational dysfunction, (b) workplace culture, (c) change in leadership, (d) disability accommodation, and (e) the faith-based workplace as a common type of nonprofit organization.
