Description
Summary:In February 2022, roughly a week before the Super Bowl, Brian Flores alleged discrimination in his firing as Miami Dolphins head coach and in his interview processes with two other teams. He sued the three teams and the National Football League (NFL). A week before the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States, media attention focused on the history of African Americans in the NFL. This case invites students to consider how hiring, firing, interviewing, and other decision-making practices have impacted both the effectiveness and the image of an iconic professional athletic league which has made public commitments to promoting diversity and inclusion in team and league management. It provides an opportunity for students to act as business, communications, and public relations consultants to analyze how teams and their front offices failed Brian Flores and others and to recommend strategic steps to repair the human resources practices and image of the league. This includes the tasks of making NFL diversity and inclusion commitments impactful and communicating their resolve to enact organizational change.
