The parcel was successfully remediated and repositioned into a vibrant residential community, which is presently home to several families. For almost a century these lands were home to a number of companies that operated industrial activities that generated commerce and jobs for many local inhabitants. There were no appropriate controls in place to ensure proper disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials, which negatively impacted the lands. Over time, the area became progressively more contaminated. As manufacturing activities left the neighborhoods, only badly contaminated plots remain. Students will be asked to describe what constitutes a brownfield property and discuss the benefits that accrue to a local economy once a site is fully remediated and ready for development. |
