Description
Summary:Jakub Doubec is a first-year, career-driven, visiting professor at the prestigious PDQ-U - the top-ranked university in a developed nation. He has an appointment to see one of the physician-scientists at the medical center on campus - PDQ-MC. This is also the top-ranked medical center in that country and one of the five best in the world. Waiting on the physician-scientist, nurse Adimu Fumulani (who is also focused on doing what is needed for career-building) and Jakub engage in a conversation regarding a quick post-examination survey about hand-hygiene that PDQ-MC uses to demonstrate compliance with regulations by government, accreditation agencies, and external funders from around the world. At PDQ-MC, healthcare professionals get in trouble if patients do not respond fully to the hand-hygiene survey. Adimu and Jakub's conversation gravitates to questions about workplace practice and arrogance in disciplining employees when patients fail to respond to surveys. After the examination, Jakub struggles with how to reply to the survey. He also struggles with some of his own career issues, including how to address the impact of arrogance in his workplace. Adimu and Jakub understand that arrogance is a tolerated byproduct in many professions, including among the full professors at PDQ-U and the physician-scientists at PDQ-MC. Those holding positions of prestige and privilege make decisions and assign consequences without much visibility or articulation, and those who face the consequences often work in fear. As a visiting professor looking to acquire prestige in a scholarship role, Jakub pauses to consider the interplay between arrogance, power, and fear in his workplace and in his own career.
