Description
Summary:The methodological elements presented here are based on the phenomenological qualitative study Trauma and Transcendence: An Allegorical Analysis of the Experience of Mothers of Special Needs Children. A dissertation that I completed at the Fielding Institute in 2000. As a first-generation college student, single parent, returning adult doctoral candidate, I sought to answer questions that arose from my work with adults with disabilities and their families. While I began this research using traditional phenomenological methods, I found that I was collecting a lot of transcripts and identifying themes without a real sense that I understood the experience of my participants. The methodology described in this paper grew to become a combination of thematic data analysis and a new process I call allegorical analysis. It became evident that I understand and express understanding through story-telling processes from my childhood foundation. The allegorical process grew from this storytelling, cultural background, reading and use of parables in my spiritual practice and from the many fables I learned as a child. This paper addresses the use of allegory for researcher analyses, participant validation processes, and sharing of the essence of the experience, allowing practitioners to improve their work with parents of children with disabilities.
