Summary:This case study explores the involvement of whānau ("family/extended family") in a research project aimed at reimagining and reshaping health-promotion practices in Aotearoa New Zealand. Instigated by whānau in 2012, the Reweti whānau hui ("gathering of the extended Reweti family") was developed as a means to foster bonds among whānau and to reconnect whānau with their marae ("ancestral meeting house") and cultural heritage. Experiencing improvements in individual and whānau well-being, whānau initiated a research project to document their transformative journey and the growth they experienced through their engagement in the regular Reweti whānau hui. The research design prioritized meaningful engagement with whānau and drew inspiration from Māori epistemologies and cultural values. Through collaborative wānanga ("knowledge sharing"), a methodologic framework was developed, grounded in the values important to whānau and their experiences of being at the marae. The framework served as a vital platform to address research challenges and maintain integrity of the project. By involving them in the research process, whānau were empowered to take ownership of their narratives and knowledge creation. This case study highlights the significance of involving whānau in research, integrating Māori epistemologies, and prioritizing cultural values to foster empowerment and self-determination in the context of health-promotion practices.
