Description
Summary:The use of racialized language in policy, across disciplines and sectors, continues to be a salient area of discourse. This is a global phenomenon in an increasingly divisive climate. Policies continue to be developed to address public areas of concern, such as increasingly racialized rhetoric across sectors. However, the policy process can also perpetuate issues of racialization through the use of racialized language. Whilst sectors, organizations, and institutions continue to strive to develop policies that promote equality, diversity, and inclusion agendas; the racialization of minority ethnic and marginalized groups in policy and concurrent negative influence continues to be a pervasive challenge underpinned by hegemonic ideology, as defined below. As researchers, it is essential to develop effective methodological skills that will enable critical engagement with policies and support the process of identifying and unpacking the influence of racialised language in policy on minoritized and marginalized individuals and groups. To achieve this goal, researchers require an in-depth understanding of racialization, the policy analysis process, and application of appropriate research methodology to enable this undertaking. This guide aims to offer an explanation and discussion of the aforementioned areas by drawing primarily on examples within the UK and US public sectors.
