Summary: | This research methods case study focuses on indigeneity in research methods through talking circles, sacred practices, oral tradition, and prayer. This paper is based on the original research of, "Oneida College Lacrosse Players' Perspectives of the Sacred Game of Lacrosse." This document will address what went into creating and carrying out my research process around Oneida College lacrosse players maintaining our traditional culture. Researchers will gain insight on intentional decisions made throughout my research process. These decisions include using talking circles, aligned with the principles of community peacemaking, through a framework of an interpretation of the medicine wheel of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. I used action research in a community based participatory research model, alongside my 12 other Oneida College lacrosse players as collaborators. This case study focuses on how each stage of the dissertation process was reflected alongside my collaborators. The steps emphasized in this case study include planning, conducting research, and the final writing and editing. This paper will offer insight into the journey of indigenizing my dissertation with 12 other Oneida College lacrosse collaborators. A final takeaway in this case study for researchers is to be true to yourself. I encourage researchers to add another verse in the powerful play of life. While my model may be unique, it can be used as a model for doing culturally aligned work in any community. |
